Jones and Shipman 540 surface grinder head getting very hot

Hi all.
A quick question, should the head of this grinder get hot in use ? mine gets extremely hot to the point where I can't keep my hand on the casing even though it has plenty of oil in it.

I am guessing it is a plain bearing spindle?

If so is the grade of oil you are using correct? It should be Velocite 3 which is about as thick as diesel.

Or in the case below thinned down thicker oil.

They should run quite warm but not too hot to touch. Check oil first - I seem to remember to get mine thin enough it had to be cut with paraffin. But there is a procedure for adjusting the cones that is pretty prescribed and works.

J&S 540 grinding head (plain bearings) working temperature

The normal working temperature is 160 degrees C. The end float to be set to 2/10ths thou. On start up run until wkg temperature is reached.
