For using flat lapping discs to manually grind cutting edges on toolstock for lathe work, I would appreciate hearing recommendations for:
[1] rpm
and
[2] coolant - I use, without any good rationale, Coleman fuel, applied by spraying on the grinding discs
In addition, I'd be interested in:
[3] comments on arbors/mounting adaptorsfor mounting the discs to the motor spindle. Currently using sorta-OK shopmade ones. I've put in a request for info on this to Sopko but haven't yet heard back from them.
TOOLSTOCK
HSS - MoMax & similar
frequently around 3/8 sq
DISCS
diamond impregnated lapping discs, 6" dia, with .5" central hole
discs each mounted on a rigid Al backing plate
overall thickness of disc + Al backer about .040
grits 60 (for roughing out) up to 800 (for refining prior to hand
polishing)
DRIVER
smooth running Bodine DC motor on a speed controller
shaft 3/8
rpms down in the hundreds, not thousands
Thanks.
