hope you can help me, im puzzled by the difference in pitch in "K"(short taper,1/3) & "L"(long taper, 1/5) length sunnen honing mandrels.
How come?
(i'm trying to make a permanent sunnen-setup on an old Gehring hone)

An "L" mandrel has twice the stone length of a "K" mandrel. The "L" mandrel has a wedge angel that is 1/2 that of a "K" mandrel. This was done so the cutting pressure setting on the machine will deliver the same pressure to the stone whether it is a "K" or "L" mandrel. This makes both stone cut the same at the same pressure setting.

If the stone is twice as long (Twice the contact area) you need twice the pressure pushing the wedge to get the same stone to part PSI. A shallower wedge angel is a mechanical advantage to increase the pressure with out adding more pressure pushing the wedge.

ok, makes sense - Thank you :-)
