    Peter, I've run both in other peoples shops (2nd job). If the OP can buy something decent and has the room, or if it is to do paying cylindrical work, get the one built for the job. If he is looking at well used old cylindricals but can find one complete in decent condition, price is right,and he has the space, get the cylindrical. They are more convenient. If budget is a factor, the work is personal, and the space is limited, a heavy T & C can be contrived to do the job in many cases.

    all very helpful. i am resolved to be patient, and that i will have to travel to see any machine (but not to Europe! too far!)

    happily these are not really such rare beasts, i will find one eventually.
