1904-1907 Leblond

Hi,
I thought I would join the forum as I am sort of new to lathe operation, besides what I learned in high school shop class. But I have been after one for a while since it has many uses for the type of hobbies I have. I picked up this machine over the weekend. Needs some TLC but makes chips. I plan on fixing it up this summer and getting everything operational. I will probably be seeking some advice from those of you out there with experience.

Its a 1904-1907 Leblond with a 16 inch swing and 96 inches between centers. It came with a single phase motor linked to a 3 speed transmission from and older tractor ( i think based off of markings on the case). It also came with a steady rest 2, 3 jaw chucks and a 4 jaw independent. I plan to re-engineer the drive some and go back to flat belting since it was rigged to use a reversed v belt. Looks like your purchase included motors, countershaft, two chucks and some other "good pieces". This will save you a LOT of money chasing down tooling.

Did you get any steady rests or follower rests? A lathe with a bed that long would probably be shipped with both steady rests, possibly tow of them, and a follower rest. Both of these types of rests can be fabricated, but it's always nice to have the originals. If you did not get them, you should ask the seller if he might still have them.

You have some nice old iron to do any needed repairs on your red and green old iron. Life is good.

Thanks for your reply. I did get a steady rest. If I encounter a job where I need a 2nd one, I'll have to fab one.
 
I like that the taper attachment mounts onto its own set of dovetail ways on the vertical rear bed surface.

Please post if/when you find the serial number, which could be in this format: Lot X No. X

About twelve years ago, another LeBlond surfaced in Michigan that was stamped: Lot 2 No. 4 1 1897

That one is the oldest known LeBlond lathe, to date.

In 1905, the lot numbering system was dropped and their lathes were stamped with serial numbers starting with a letter or two.

A few surprises so far, but nothing I can't manage to fix. The support for the lead screw is "gone" to say the least, it looked like it was repaired at one point by brazing. I think I should be able to find some sort of babbitt bearing I can bolt into the apron. Also, the pivot for the cross feed shaft drive tensioner was split, i think I can braze this for an decent repair. I am open to any repair suggestions the community may have.:scratchchin:
 
Congratulations on your new-to-you lathe. I have a 14" that is maybe 10-15 years younger.

If & when you may have a chance, I would welcome some close-up photos of the taper attachment on your lathe. My lathe has the attachment but portions of it are missing. There is an adjustable angle 'trough' but the part(s) that slide in the 'trough' and that connect to the cross-slide are missing. So it'd be super helpful to me to be able to see what ought to be there, so that I can replicate it.

Mine looked even more grubby and mistreated than yours when I first saw it, but after extensive cleaning, it turned out to be in pretty decent shape. Other people here dwarf my knowledge and experience but if I can be of possible help I am glad to be.
