There have been a couple of recent threads on interesting engines (R-R Merlin and BRM V-16); this Australian design from the 1930s might be of interest.
The car/engine was referred-to as the Chamberlain 8; it did indeed have eight pistons but one set operated as valves, albeit with some contribution to compression;
