This old chest measure's 23" x 16" x 12" high. My Dad picked it up years ago in this condition. As you can see it was stripped of original finish. The top lid went missing as well as the hardware. Some genius pretty much destroyed a really nice piece of carpentry here.

What is left is very interesting. I thought I would share the remains with you :)

Dad always deeply appreciated the workmanship this box possesses. I appreciate it as well. I have enough woodworking tools from my Great Grandfather to fill this box...keep it all in one place so to speak.

Any comments will be very welcome.I think Oak..any guess as to what type of handles would have been fitted? I'll attempt to make the top lid copying my other chests.

I found it interesting the thin drawer is dovetailed. The bottom drawer is not. Also I like how the drawer bottoms were narrowed around the edges to fit the groove. Too bad about the pulls. I'll make up some brass rings and use silver solder to attach a hinge piece.

The top is deep..storage for wood planes? Anybody know anything about this particular construction?

Better yet..anyone have an orphan top lid I can somehow use to restore this box? I can cut down but not add too :)

If you aren't sure if it's oak or ash, and it seems to weigh less than you would think it should, think chestnut.

Nice joinery in many of those old chests. One of those old carpenters chests showed up at my house missing the lid and internal compartments. I turned it into a wood box for my stove. One wonders how many have met that same fate. If it had been complete I would have used it for a cedar chest or tool storage of some kind. Missing lids? maybe related to leg thieves?...Hmmmmm
