for 4 years in the 60's I lived on the east bank of the Mississippi, New Orleans and Baton Rouge
I became certified as a sport diver by a commercial diver named Shirley
he stood around 5-11 and was built like a well casing --and to go along with his girly name he wore pink peg pants and go-go boots
nobody messed with him---in 1965 he saved Baton Rouge from what could have been a nuclear equivalent event--recovery of 600 ton chlorine barge from The River
he splashed after divemate was crushed by rootwad of big oak tree tumbling the riverbed
steam cranes were employed for lift
a prior chlorine barge accident --1962--dumped 1100 ton container into river off Natchez--
Shirley's divehat choice was the DESCO mark 5---US Navy standard for 50 years
