Oil for antique planer gear box

My 1940's Delta planer instructions say to use "SAE 140 or 600W oil". The 600W is like molasses and was used in Model T transmissions. Would it be better to use a more modern transmission oil like SAE140/85? I'm afraid the 600W will make it hard to start when the machine is 40 degrees in my outside shop.

I avoid any high pressure additives if there are any bronze items in the gear box. There is some research that shows that the HP additives attack bronze and brass. Some people don't agree, but it is easy enough to get straight gearbox oil from NAPA, so why risk it?
