Hendey lathe #34437, a 12 x 30, No.1 High Speed model, was one of 18 No.1 High Speed lathes ordered on April 24, 1942 and scheduled for
completion during January and February 1943. The Spindle Speed was 2000RPM. The motor was Frame225, 3HP, 1800RPM, 220Volts, 60Cycles,
3Phase. The original owner was Remington Rand, Inc, no city or state was listed. There are no longer any specific Patterns, Castings or
Repair Parts for the No.1 High Speed lathe left in inventory, but a few of the Repair Parts for the 12 inch Toolroom lathe will fit the
No.1 High Speed lathe. All of the original drawings are still in the files, so parts can be made as required.
John Oder has covered the salient features of this lathe, but I will add a few observations. It would appear that the manual Collet
Closing mechanism has been removed, so any Collet work will have to be done using the Drawing-in Attachment. Unlike any other Hendey
lathe with a Quick Change Gear Box, the only way to change the Feed Rate on a No.1 High Speed is to change the gears in the Gear Box
on the left side of the Headstock. If you will post the gears now installed, I should be able to tell you the Feed Rate. Keep in mind,
that instead of connecting the Spindle to the Gear Train via an Intermediate Gear, the connection is made via a "V" belt. If this belt
is missing or damaged, I should be able to give you the belt specifications for a replacement. From the amount of rebuilding done to
the Drive Unit, I doubt that there is much left of the original Hendey Drive System. If that is the case, trying to return this lathe
to its former glory, would be very expensive. Since you plan to use the lathe for occasional farm repairs, it is best to stay with the
present Drive System. Several Belt companies will make up endless "Panther" Style belts that will work on your lathe, but it will be
necessary to remove the Spindle to install it.
