I have to make a couple of these and am wondering about material. Commercially available ones are often cast iron. What about steel? particular alloys or just cold rolled or what have you used?

I got a good cast iron 1-1/2x8 backplate from littlemachineshop.com for a price that was about half of anyone else's price. Material was good and it was pre-threaded.

I've been told that the dampening qualities of cast iron make it better than steel for backplates.

Others have successfully used an aluminum alloy called Fortal. You can get chunks of it on ebay.

My father has made many backplates for chucks out of plain carbon steel or something similar to 4140. I guess he used what ever grade he had laying around. Take care, Jake

Steel has gained a reputation for binding on the thread and making chuck removal an additional chore.

Cast iron provides a bit of self-lubricity.

If you could make one from Alu, you could make one from brass (better bronze). Now wouldn't that be nice?!

Cheers
