This thing has been in the shop since time immemorial and I can't figure out its exact purpose. All it says on it is Maxwell Industries. If it is for boring and facing it doesn't have very much travel. Any help is appreciated.
I would need more pictures to be more confident but I think it is a recessing head. It would cut something like an o-ring or snap ring groove. The steel part behind the tool would touch the face of either the part or a fixture plate. Further movement of the spindle into the part would cause the slide to move sideways, utilizing a tool to cut a groove. When the spindle was retracted, a spring pulled the slide back to center.
