Repulsion Start Induction Motor needs a push to start, once running works fine, any ideas what to look at? under the commutator there are another set of loose copper pieces that look like they might seat in place when running? it has a spring near the loose pieces, should these be held in place by the spring?

Thanks

most likely the brushes are open circuit.

there is a spring that wraps around the fingers. its common for the spring to break. its tension isn't super critical if its broken just try and fix it without changing the total length too much.

there may also be shorted turns under the base windings so even though the spring broke on the fingers and you pushed it to start.. it may run. at risk of burning up if it never gets up to full speed. (once it gets up close to full speed the copper fingers will short out the commutator properly even if the spring is broken)

The spring that holds tension on the brushes is intact and the brushes are good and free in their holders. once the motor starts, it runs fine, plenty of power, no bad smell when working under load for some time.

After doing some research, it looks like the spring that holds the pivoting segments may be in the wrong place and not actually holding the segments in place for starting.

The spring that holds the copper fingers is in the right place, and if I change the brush position, it will start once or twice, then back to needing help.
