I don't think Hendey made a lathe without leadscrew reverse. As for plain versus ball bearings, both my home machines are plain bearings. Don't knock it until you try it. Plain bearings make for a superb finish.
I only dislike plain bearings due to them being more susceptible to wear from poor maintenance, ie, lack of lubrication. That lathe strikes me as poorly maintained from the pictures. I find the single phase conversion off-putting as well. Maybe it's worth looking at after all...

The EBM in the listing is threaded spindle nose, which Hendey would offer right up to the start of WW2
