I found a Yankee 650 Micrometer insert Laid in an old leather bound Number 20 Starrett Catalog with this emblem on the one side

...any info appreciated as google search gets me nowhere.

(If this image is too big please let me know and I'll resize...it's formatted for a 17" monitor)

Lifted from a webpage regarding Gruen Watches (Who can forget their ad: "This Christmas, give your wife a gorgeous Gruen!")

"A Tribute to Business Character, by Elwood E. Rice. Published by Rice Leaders of the World Association, 1930. This small, very beautifully printed book commemorates an award given to Fred and George Gruen at the Cincinnati Club, to honor them for their "business character." To belong to the Rice Leaders of the World, a business had to be financially secure and must have conducted all of its affairs in an ethical manner. Among the companies certified by Rice, Gruen was singled out for this special award (the first of its kind) on the 10th anniversary of their acceptance into the orgianization. The book contains speeches by Dr. Rice, Fred Gruen and George Gruen. Fred's comments elsewhere in the site, about his philosophy behind the guild theme, are from his speech here. This volume is in the Rare Books department of the Cincinnati Public Library. "

So, you are looking for info on Elwood E. Rice.......

Hi John, thxs for that info I missed. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info about Elwood Rice on google search... I wonder if Laroy Starrett was a Mason, as Elwood E. Rice seems to have been a 32nd degree. I'm guessing Starrett must have been included in the Rice Association's distinguished list of companies that year in 1913...and the Starrett Co. was proud enough to put the Rice crest on the announcement of the new Yankee 650 mic that they Laid in the #20 catalog.

Maybe the Yankee came out after the catalog went to print...or shortly there- after, because it's not listed in the #20, and only shows up in a couple catalogs after that...probably only produced for 8-10 years or so??

I wonder if leather binding was available for a small fee on those old catalogs, or if the Rice Association issued some fancy versions...all I know is it sure feels extra special holding that old book with the nice binding and gold lettering...pretty cool stuff, as has been mentioned here before.

Interesting...thxs Rivett. You wouldn't happen to have an extra "Essentials To Success" that you're weeding out of the library, would you?
