Jim Christie recently sent me this photo which appeared on Shorpy.

It shows A Class loco No. 419 at the Petone Workshops, c.1909.

I believe this engine was built by A&G Price at Thames, they are still going strong.

One of the sharp eyes on Shorpy questions the balance weight positioning on the first driver. These engines were balanced compounds, with two inside HP cylinders and the two LP cylinders outside.

These locomotives had intercepting valves which allowed a supply of boiler steam to the LP cylinders, hence full simple operation for starting.

Later converted to two-cylinder simples, had an average life of 52 years.
