Default pratt & Whitney #3 horizontal mill bearing removal

I have a Pratt & Whitney #3 horizontal mill with grease fittings for lube of the main shaft that turns the flat belt pulleys. I cant get grease through the rear fitting. It goes through the fitting itself. I tried to put a wire through the channel and it wont pass through to the bore. The front bearing is a tapered roller but the rear has a race in the bore that the shaft is keyed to so this race turns with the shaft. This race or sleeve feels loose - I can turn it easily and I can move it in or out a small amount but I cant remove it as though it is retained by something I cant see. I want to make sure it is lubricated properly. Can anyone with experience with this machine tell me how theirs was when they disassembled it? It seems to me that if it had to be driven out it would not move in its bore like it does. I am new to this site and I offer my thanks for any helpful info. Thanks, Bob

I have had one No.3 P&W mill that had roller/ball bearings- they are unusual. It's been too long since I had mine apart to be of much help. The only thing I remember for sure is that there was a hex-head set screw holding the flat belt pulley in place that needed a shortened L-bend hex key to remove.

Andy, Mine has the same difficult to remove screws holding the flat belt pulley in place and I modified an allen wrench to do it. I am hoping someone has disassembled one of these recently and can tell me the set up of their rear bearing and how to remove it so I can see why I cant get grease into it. Bob

Bob, sorry I can't help, it's just been too long and I don't remember much about the rear bearing. Yours is only the second roller/ball NO. 3 mill I've heard of. Most are plain bearing.
