tracing a gunstock for milling duplicates.

Greetings from Oklahoma.
I am looking for ideas on how to make a device for duplicating gunstocks. I would prefer to make someting which would be able to trace a stock and save a digital record of the dimensions for cnc machining. What could I use as a probe and dro and what software could be used? ultra Precision is not a requirement.
I am also looking for ideas on how to automatically make a replacement stock using an original stock in a tracing fixture. This would be a lot easier to accomplish than my ultimate goal.

An interesting project. Using a 4 axis cnc mill to cut gunstocks. Place the blank gunstock between centers on an electronic indexer. Using a 1/2" ball endmill, carve away. I know Milltronics sells a digitzer system for their mills. I think it's workable, but using a regular stock duplicator is most likely faster and cheaper. Many good stockmakers can duplicate your old stock with no problems. Just my thoughts, Larry.
