I may have an opportunity to buy a used
Boss 3 Bridgeport Mill. I was wondering if
anybody has upgraded one to a PC/generic CNC
system. I would take off the old control and
use a PC. Would I need to replace the encoders and motors to interface with the PC
control? How much is an old Boss 3 worth if
mechanically sound? Just curious.

msrm, Yep, we coverted a Boss 5 to pc a couple of years ago and have been cutting some pretty nice parts with it.I'll have to be up front tho, without a good cad/cam program it,s a real pita.had to learn that the hard way.The other issue(of course) is money! how much will your wallet stand to make the conversion "worthwhile". as the saying goes, there aint no free lunch. If you would like to see our conversion it is on the yahoo ahha design forum.http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ahha_cnc/files/.also you might want to check out http://www.anilam.com/home.html only problem here is for 6 G's more you can buy a real nice Haas mini mill with lots more Z. Anyhow, hope this helps .

The AHHA control is a pretty good setup. Their drives are very reliable. Their software is setup to take advantage of various CAD formats. We have done about a half dozen systems, keeping the motors and replacing the rest. You can do it yourself for well under $10,000 and have a nice CNC mill. They are very helpful with phone support and their installation manual is very clear and detailed.
