A while back, someone posted comments that a really whiz-bang low cost method to make CNC convresions was just "six months away." Any word on this process?

I converted my boss (already cnc) machine for less than a thousand dollars.. computer and all. Using a 2.4 intel processor and intel motherboard gecko drives Plus using a Inverter to change the single phase power I had to match the 3 phase motor..

Did you use existing stepper motors or did you buy new? How big is a boss? I have a Saeilo which is basically a Bridgeport. X is 30 inches, Y is 12 inches and Z is 4-3/4. There is no control of the spindle, speeds or coolant thru the control, so basically it is only a CNC positioner.
If you had to replace your motors, how do you know how much torque you needed? I assume that from the Gecko page they only sell the drives. I am guessing you use these to replace your existing controller boards and these control the stepper motors?

Thanks for any details,
Bryan
