has anyone found a source of steppers with enough torque to turn a normal size leadscrew without astronomical gear reduction / loss of rpm ?

how about building one or re-working / rewinding a 3 phase alternator to adapt? ( these are incredibly cheap and plentiful! )
any motor (electric) heads out there??
I would be interested in other peoples experments in this line.

i read a long time ago that you could convert a alternator (out of a car) into a stepper by removing the diodes and wiring it up to be a stepper and you have to give it dc on the brushes to give it a magnet to work with
i never tryed it, so, do a serch on the net and see if you can get any more info

Kychas, I tried it and found it to put out enough torque to pull a 6" pair if vice grips out of my hand. Without having a suitable stepper driver i had to "step" by changing wire positions. Crude but quite effective.
I will post any new results of further experments.
