Lathe tool eye adjustment?

I just turned my first part tonight. I used the tool eye to set tools and I'm .024 off in x diameter.

The part comes out fine if I set the tools off the part.

I read the manual on how to adjust the tool eye parameters but I can not for the life of me make sense of it.

Can someone tell me in english how to change this parameter? (actually looks to be a pair of parameters one for OD one for ID sides of the probe?)

Thanks for any help you can offer

Dave

M39
tool eye tool
0 all offsets
take skim cut on part
using jog not hand wheel
stop spindle with out backing tool away from part
measure part diameter (without moving tool away from part)
call position screen (without moving tool away from part)
input diameter of part into x axis postion
move tool and part so you can bring down tool eye
at the proper rapid reduce rate(so you don't smash the $1200 sensor) bring in tool and touch sensor till it stops(beeps) do not move tool away just leave it touching sensor
go to postion page
right down x position
go to m39 in parameter
input the number you wrote down
back tool away from tool eye
put eye away
shut down machine
start back up
tool eye tool
program a simple diameter turn
run the cut in auto
check to see if diameter of part run in auto
matches what you asked for
if it does, good
if not, do it all again
make sure your not moving tool when i said don't move tool
if it's still wrong
repost,
and we'll check some other issues
(i'm not the best technical writer)

Thanks

When you say zero all offsets do you mean set tool lengths to zero with the tool eye, or off the part or what?

This is not addressing your actual question, but for what it's worth, if one of your tool eye contacts ever stops working, it is possble to take them apart and repair them, as I have done so sucessfully in the past. I'm assuming the late 1990's and older design in saying that.

You can also upgrade to the newer more compact design tool eye for alot less money than buying a direct replacement for the old one...but the problem is the mount is slightly different. Friend of mine (independant Mazak tech) makes adapters for mounting the new tool eye design on the older arms if you ever want to do that.

not really a tooling guy but what i mean is
the page where you tell machine + or - .003 to get your part to come out the right size
don.
you must got them good fingures still
when i go in there half the time i end up breaking those
damn little wires
that little clip is enough to make me throw
the GD thing in the trash most the time
but your right i usually give it a try with mixed results
the omrons ARE much cheaper
and another sorce for the old style is
All World Machinery Supply
(815) 943-9111
they sell them for about half mazaks price

Hey thanks a bunch. I'm spot on now, about one tenth off (well within my spec), just did five of em, all the same.

Got a big grin I can't get off my face.

Thanks

Dave
