Looks like the spindle encoder on our HAAS HL1 BB lathe has gone out again. It went bad just after the warranty ran out about 6years ago, and it's done the same thing again.

They mount a very large timing belt pulley directly to the shaft of the encoderand belt drive it with a pretty good side load. The pulley runs VERY close to the main reduction pulley and as the encoder bearings go bad it lets the timing pulley go tink, tink into the main one until they fail and it grinds into the larger pulley.

It would seem to me that the timing pulley is very massive to be suported by the tiny encoder shaft. Has anybody else had this problem and come up with a work around, or do I just throw another encoder at it and see how long it goes? If I get another 6 years I guess I shouldn't complain too much. Id rather fix it right though.
