How To Make An Old 15HP 3 Phase Go

Just two contactors (so I had six contacts to play with) from Size 1 starters, 4 start caps totaling 1000Mfd. Had to interface old mag starter (240v coil) and new (120V) coils for the contactors.

I.E., the new push button station start button works the 120V contactors coil circuit, and the stop button opens the 240V coil circuit in the original mag starter.

No potential relays or other fancy gizmos. The start button does it all - unless you hit it too briefly.

The massive 1926 dated Westinghouse reversing switch does what it is supposed to, but not with the motor running. :)

This rig gives me 10 of the original 15 HP, which is fine for playing with on the 1916 Lodge & Shipley 24" Selective Head.

I really like that big old reversing drum. I used the same unit on my 1918 Sidney...mine was dated 6-28-20 on the cover and has the same black painted wood handle. Hard to say how many times its been thrown and still doesn't show much wear. I think mine is style 204113 but I cant make out the volt or amp ratings. Looks good on the L&S. :) Ed.

That is how I like to do them. A second contact block on the start switch to hold the start capacitors in the circuit as long as you hold the button down.

S/N 19447 - Its Alive!!!

Made chips today - with apron apart and range box off for boring to install bronze bushings and lead screw out.

So just positioned saddle with pinch bar (cast in rack is for that, right?:D) and did some facing off with the compound on a crookedy sawed 9" OD piece.

Appropriately, the chips went "boing!" when they hit the bar stock laying under the lathe.

22 1/2 RPM = 53 SFM

Here are the five non PB photos related to this thread

On edit.....may be worth noting that no "converting" is going on in this thread - all that is being done is starting and running a hefty three phase motor on single phase - incidentally with zero issues for nine years now
