About a year ago, built a 30 hp RPC for a customer with a woodwork shop. He recently bought a belt sander with a 40hp motor. I just built him another 30 hp converter and use the 1st converter to start the 2nd. When the two 30's are idling (60 hp worth of converter), the 240v single phase current draw is 11 amps. When the 40 is started, single phase current of all three motors is 54 amps. I then added a bank power factor correction capacitors (194 uf per leg) and total motor current dropped to 19 amps. Of course, as he loads the sander, the single phase current draw goes up (about 2 amps per amp of load motor increase).

Have several other customers that I have added PFC caps to their large machine motors to decrease the incoming power. I usually do this on their 7 1/2 hp motors and larger. The PFC caps will pay for themselves in a few months (depending on how much the machine is used).

Thought this might be interesting to those of you who have large motors powered be RPC's.
