I got a used rpc for pretty much free today from another boardmember (Thank You RKdeckel), who used it for many years till it smoked on him.
It is a Phase-a-Matic, 5HP motor. So I got it home and opend it up to find a blown cap, 50uf.
The motor spins freely and doesn't really smell like it burnt.
I am wondering what I should check on it before putting new caps into it. Anything other than obvious short to frame ? It has two large 50uf caps and one small 300uf cap, all 370 volt rated dielectric types, no oil filled .
What do you guys say ?

Well I replaced all 3 caps , 2 50uf oil filled and a 300uf electrolitic type.
Powerd it up and within 60 seconds the 300uf smoked..... so i look at the old ones again and what I had thought said 300uf on the old one was actually only 30uf. replaced that one, corrected my input lines and it is running fine.

Electrolytics are rated for momentary use, only.

Because all three caps are in cans, all three are oil-filled, and should be replaced in-kind.

For a 240 volt RPC, the minimum rating should be 370 VAC.
