I've added a 10 hp compressor to my shop and I'm trying to decide the best way to power it up. I have a very reliable 7.5hp rpc system in place and have decided not to change it. So, the 10hp has presented me with my problem. What's the best way to run a heavy load single motor application? I'm going to build a modified static converter with start capacitors and switching relays. My major concern is how the compressor motor will start under load? Is this a possible solution? If it's not , I can add a 15 hp Idler to the converter to create and rpc. Any thoughts would be really appreciated.

ThankSteve

Adding the 15HP idler with a contactor from your 240VAC main using the existing 7.5HP RPC to provide the third leg to start it should work. Using the combined 15+7.5HP idlers should be adequate to start and run your compressor. Just don't try to start your compressor unless both idlers are running.
