Heh, that got your attention didn't it? (Just wait, there's some useful metalworking content coming later on...)

My old truck needs some new tunes. I'm going to be driving it alot soon and some good music makes the miles go by.....especially when you find yourself in BFE Kentucky with 1 gospel station and 1 classic country station that both fade in and out as you wend thru the hills I have an iPod and an RF adapter, but *all* sound quality is lost that way. I want to go...

Forklift Repairs (Part 4) and Other Roadside Observations!

Posted 06-03-2008 at 02:40 AM by matt_isserstedt
We last left off where I ran out of hydraulic fluid...exciting conclusion I know. You definitely know when you've reached the ragged edge in this particular machine because you can't tilt, lift, and you can't steer...

I set out for the Home Depot to buy one of their high priced gallons ($11.29/gal, OW!) of odorless mineral spirits to use as a chain cleaner in the final stages of reassembly....I was pulling past the front of the store when my eye caught a guy standing what seemed 12...

Forklift rebuilding - part 3

Posted 05-29-2008 at 02:51 AM by matt_isserstedt
Alright, I think you have me pegged...as a forklift nut

The rebuild journey takes us tonight to the back end of the 7000 lb Hyster in search of the elusive power steering leak. The forklift dripped transmission fluid from both ends of the cylinder whenever the lift was operated...depresing to have to keep cleaning up! Wow, that was a cliffhanger there. I left you as the cup was starting to go under the ring. Really wanted a single blog entry to capture it all....BUT....only 4 photos are allowed per blog entry...bummer. Note I didn't put up an emoticon here...it counts as 1 of 4 images allowed!

So, I cut the original blog-post in half and here we go again where I left off...

The cup is now completely under the ring.

Forklift rebuilding - part 1

Posted 05-28-2008 at 02:41 AM by matt_isserstedt
We start here in a familiar vein for me...lots of dirty wrench work, non-glamorous parts cleaning, all to make a discarded piece of equipment come back to life...err..function.

The forklift up to now has had a complete brake overhaul, rear swing arm and steering removed, cleaned and bearings/ball joints replaced, and the headgasket replaced on the flathead engine.

So this is the last and most challenging project...save the hardest for last, right? Rebuilding the mult-stage/telescoping...
