leadscrew moving

I'm having a minor problem with my bridgeport, its an old 9x36.

the x lead-screw moves laterally sometimes and binds things up so you cant move the table. It appears that the dial on the left hand side gets pulled up very tight to the bracket and locks things up. At first i thought it was a shimming problem with the power feed, but ive adjusted that to what appears to be correct and the problem persists.

anyone have any insight on what to look for when i take it apart this weekend?

Are the bearings being reatained by the bearing cap? Nut tight at the end of the leadscrew? Is the leadscrew moving in relation to the power feed housing? Should be very straightforward to solve.

thanks for the info! its always nice to have an idea what your looking for before you start tearing things apart. :)

got the table all fixed up.

the bearing retainer was completely missing! so after a new bearing retainer and making a few shims to keep the dial from binding, all is now well.

thanks
