Was surprised as all hell to see a Hardinge lathe for sale in this part of the world.... Along I go to the auction and as the photo showed it is a DV-59... I did manage to pick it up, for an OK price, more then I wanted to pay... I had to bid against someone who told me he just wanted the base for god knows what reason...

Anyway as mentioned earlier it is a DV-59 serial number 15219.. No idea of age other then it is post 1960 as the belt is replaceable without pulling the spindle...

It is fitted with a genuine Hardinge 3 jaw chuck that does not want to come off (I did loosen the set screw) came with a fair sprinkling of rust, although it all seems to be surface rust only.... I would say it sat in an area exposed to the elements for awhile, but not completely in the open.. Just an open sided shed...

As well as the tailstock and cross and top slide, it also has a fixed steady...

No collets..

Powers up, but will not change speeds... It is stuck at the lowest speed setting... The relay clicks in but nothing happens, although I am not feeding it 240V as I do not have that type of plug in the shed only 415V ones... Maybe the little speed adjustment motor runs on 240v and not 415v..

Spindle was dead quiet...

I have got the electrics sorted now.... Have got the chuck off...

Just wondering about the belts.... This machine has A section V-belts fitted and I think they are not the correct type, going by the speed adjustment...

What sort of belts should this lathe have?

Edit found them here

http://www.practicalmachinist.com/v...thes/changing-belts-hvl-h-179821/#post1110465

I guess HLV-H and late DV-59 take the same belts...

good year 1626v380 and a 1626v597

The belts fitted to the lathe are plain A section belts...

Yes the pulley at the motor and headstock have been modified and A section pulleys installed... Machining away half the original V in the process...

Luckily I guess they have left half the original V, I should be able to repair them, by making a new side for the pulleys... If I can find the specs for the belt section...

I have repaired V section pulleys before with broken sides with a new side machined up...

Looks like you've got a nice little project there. I thought you guys weren't supposed to get rust, apart from the biblical flooding of a little while ago...

I believe they all used the same two belts when fitted with the Reeves drive. Think I've got one from Father's DV59 on my HLV. I doubt if the nearest belt-shop will have them as a stock item though! The numbers I put in the post you linked to are definitely the modern equivalent numbers for the HLV and HLV-H.

Thanks Mark.....

Did a bit more research last night and will measure up before I order.... Came across some conflicting info last night on belt sizes..

Both here and here have got belts too long.

Yet here a chap bought a belt marked 525-9625 for a HLV-H and it is too short for a HLV..

So I am thinking, Hardinge used the same suffix number for different sized belts (9625). But had a different prefix number..

Just a working theory...

I've seen at least one or two come up before, at least one as I considered buying it. However I decided I really didn't need a second op. lathe and it was a "project". I don't know how they came to be imported out here, but they seem to be pretty tired. Good to see Pinky will have a stable mate.

Yes the plan is to have it to complement Pinky... Sell off the Hercus 260... It should fetch a princely sum, being in excellent order and 240V VFD, with a lot of accessories..

I have done a preliminary rough measurement for the top belt and yes the one for the HLV which is approx 60" long is no way going to fit, the belt length will be around the 52"..

So that confirms that the number hardinge used 9625 and 9624 have nothing to do with the actual belt size...

Have placed some of the rusty bits in molasses to derust them, just the handles and dials from the cross slide and tailstock...

Long time 'lurker' first time poster...

Well I am feeling less 'lonely' I am down in Melbourne and will be receiving my HLV in November being shipped from Sydney ....nice to know there are some Aussies with a Hardinge good luck with the project and keep posting!
