Good day,
I am considering making my own backplates for my HLV, since combinened purchase/shipping adds up quickly.
I found only one reply of someone who actually mentiones this.
Since i have the taper attachment, do you think it will be repeating accurate enough, and mostly, durable enough if i made these out of a higher grade steel without hardening?
I do not have much experience in choosing steel, so any steel-recommendation/specification is apreciated.
With kind regards,
Christof Kok

They are often made of cast iron, I think
steel of any sort would be fine. Seems like
a great deal of work though, unless you happen
to have a rough blank available.

Many years ago, I bought some semi-finished cast iron backplates and made a couple of Hardinge 4 degree backplates. It was extremely difficult, but it did save several hundred dollars at today's prices.

I have made two of them in the past out of CRS. They work just fine at least for my usage. It helps if you can use a sine bar to set up your compound however. This would be the most fussy part of the machining is getting the exact angle.
