Cat's head, never heard of it called like that. Degrading name for a cat...
I use a dowel of wood with a taper turned on it. Drill the stock diameter size hole in the center of it. A piece of wood of medium density like Douglas Fir works for me. You have a lathe, so use it.

"What's in a name?"
Perhaps he should be looking at what many, if not also "most", gunsmiths have seen fit to DIY to expand their lathe's capability set, and for barrel work. Mostly.

You can screw this stop device into the back of a collet. Insert collet into head. Then attach your chuck. Not recommending the source in the link, just chosen for the good picture.
I have used one for years. Bored a hole into the head so I can insert custom small diameter stops. Beautiful. A project for a novice.
