Building a RPC for a 1 1/2 HP Series 1
Hi All,
Can I use this motor for a roto phase for the above mill.
1.5 HP motor Hemco Cast Iron 1725rpm 3 phase 145T frame

My rule of thumb is to have the idler motor at least 30% larger than the motor I need to start. So I would look for a 2HP for this application. Might as well mention a variable speed drive as an option if this is the only machine you want to run. Its easier and more practical. If the VFD is not a viable solution put your feelers out locally. 140 seem like alot of money for a 3ph motor. But then again I live in America's in industrial wasteland and that stuff is all over. Paid 120 for a used 7.5hp, new 10hp, and 2 electrical cabinets.

Thanks WD,
I was looking at the VFD solution it looks like a variable speed thing and not just a phase creator. My mill is a 1985 with a variable speed built in. How would this work? When I looked at the VFD i saw a terminal post that looked like 10-32 screws how would you hook up #12 wire L1 and L2 from my house? Sorry about the questions.

A variable speed drive with a variable speed mill might be redundant but I am sure you would like the flexibility. As far as wiring a drive, post the model you are looking at and I am sure someone will offer suggestions.

Hello, is this the only pieces of three phase equipment you plan to have? If so a vfd would work, if not I'd go 3-7.5hp on a phase converter.

Thanks Shawn,
Yes this is all I will be running. Should I get a 3hp rated VFD?

I found this-"you cannot use the VFD to power "other" electronics on a machine, only the motor".

I am really glad I joined this forum. The VFD is the best way to go for me, thanks for the direction.
I have one that I am looking at: 3HP 2.2KW 10A 220-250V
VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE INVERTER VFD NEW 3HP 2.2KW i1 | eBay
Will this be okay for one machine 1.5 HP Series 1
What else do you need for controlling or wiring from house panel to knee mill?
Do I have to interface with the RS-485
-
It will be okay. There is no such thing as free shipping. It is included in the price.
I have seen a similar units go for $65 to $95. Forget about the RS-485 control.
I suspect thse people acquired a bulk shipment of these things. Can you believe
that they don't even try to correct the bad english in the specification.

There are single phase to three phase VFD converters. I bought one for a 3 phase fan. I don't know the cost but it is worth a try.

Is there a difference between a VFD and a VFD Converter. I am only interested in creating the needed 3rd phase not the ability to vary the frequency.
