Default Running in back gears on BP is loud. Normal?

Running my Bport in back gears is quite loud. Is that normal or something I should look into. No crunchy noises, just sounds like a bunch of gears winding out. Much louder than running gears on my lathe. Thanks.

Yes the lower the speed the louder it is. You need to compare with other Bridgeports to get a fair comparison. This is also why even if a mill has a 1.5 hp to 3 hp motor you get closer to 1-2 at the cutter as the drive efficiency goes down at lower speeds.

I would not consider this normal, by this description its possible that the highrange drive is partially engaged while running in back gear.

If the splined shaft is out of 'time' with the detent then the bull gear may be forced up into the cover plate.
    Varispeed or step pully mill?
