Staring at a solid white background all day could be pretty tough on the eyes I reckon.

It is odd tough, I do prefer white ( or at least very bright ) background on wordprocessors, database forms, spreadsheets or webpages.
With CAD tough, I had a wicked hard time with the standard Blue of Solidworks even, let alone the typical garden variety CAD programs with their ultra bright white. Could not stand them for more than a few minutes.
Must say tough, the new AutoCAD and Inventor backgrounds are - tough not pitch black - quite nice. Almost looks liek a black background on a monitor with the brightness turned way up. Works and feels good.

I agree, word processors and spreadsheets should have white backgrounds.
Maybe it is the way your eyes focus on a CAD project, I find I am "taking in" more of the display than on a Word document where I'm focused down on the line I'm typing?
