Carlton head
Carlton is considered US heavy iron correct? Or is heavy iron an actual brand name?
I picked up this radial drill because i thought it was cheap, $450 and huge metal for the price. Well Big to me at least I'm still new to metal working. I think it's a 0A Carlton, can't find serial. But I have a question about how this head works for tapping; motor reverse or mechanical, tightening a clutch? Please note it does not have the hand paddle for tapping, nor does it have the handle under the head, it came with push button controls for forward, reverse, etc.

answered my own question. on the 0a's, the motor is directly attached to the head and is reversed by reversing the motor itself. 1a's and up have a clutch(the motor is on the column end of the arm)and that's what the handle under the head, which I thought I was missing, controls.
the knob in the pics enable and disable an electrical relay. enable the relay reverses motor by moving spindle up with the manual feed handles. It does seem to reverse the motor BEFORE the backlash in the spindle is taken up, therefore before the spindle actual begins to move up.

Have you gotten the drill up and running ? In the past I have called out to Natco/Carlton in Richmond, Indiana to get parts for our Carlton radials, I tried calling them the other day and the phone has been disconnected so I googled them and I guess they are out of business, I don't know for sure. I have the 2 Carlton and a couple Cincinnati bickfords. I am trying to get rid of our OA radial for the room. I have it on the for sale section of this forum. If I scrap it is there any parts you may need ? Just hate to see it sitting out side and just as soon see if we can help out someone. We started with this as our first drill 20+ years ago. Mike

This outfit in Cleveland says they are the owner of Carlton. Looks to still be up and running, ought to be worth a shot:

We have 4 Carltons at work, I just bought the 4th last week. Lucas owns the rights, big dollars to repair, but excellent service. Called looking to buy a electrical print, sent it free and walked through the troubleshooting with me, and he was right on.

Article about demolition. Dingbat reporter talks about hopes for a panera in the spot. That should bring some great paying jobs. The reporter has a degree in history. I hope the college revokes it.

Wonderbar. Maybe if the reporter really wants to see something inspirational she can float her boat up the Lehigh River and marvel at the obnoxious neon casino that has sprouted out of the once glorious Bethlehem Steel complex.
