Default Cincinnati #3 Vertical Mill won't change RPM....

Sorry, its a #2 not #3 as the title says! I bought this machine under power back a few months ago and have discovered that while the rotating RPM selector moves and indicates all the available RPM's, the spindle doesn't speed up or slow down with any of the RPM's you select. It is stuck with just one RPM speed to be determined. The feed selector does work fine when you go through all the feeds shown. It doesn't make any noises and all the fluids are in the middle of the sight glasses. I do notice that when you disengage the spindle lever, the spindle takes a while to come to a complete stop. It sat for several years without being used by the previous owner, i'm wondering if something is just stuck or worse.

Thanks for any insight and wisdom!

Sound like you are stuck in synchromesh. Its not finishing.
Give me a serial number, so I can get the correct manual.

Its a 210-12 vertical Dial type mill, model LL Made in 1943

Have you checked the oil pressure. Should be 290 to 310 psi. You should port pressure to the speed selected. Then the shift of the right gears for that speed. You may have to pull the shifter bracket,
Check the column oil level and the pressure to start. Possible sheared pin too.

I'm relatively green to this type of milling machine and don't have a manual, so I don't know where there is a pressure port to check or test the pressure your speaking about. Any diagrams you may have or others might have and can post would be helpful.

This is from a old manual with just pictures of the parts. See what you can do with this one, let me know.

    Good luck !

I bought a 2ml 2 weeks ago. ran thru all the speeds and every thing seem to work ok. hooked ir up to a vfd and everything works except the spindle speed change
I've found now it wont change speed and is stuck in a lower speed. it has no oil pressure or oil in the column sight glass , Ive changed oil and cleaned the strainer. adjusting the oil pressure does nothing.
Any insight into correcting my problem?? I have no experience with this tool and want to get it going

As long as your pressure is okm, it should work. Watch your pressure as you turn the spindle speed dial. Does the pressure stay good when it stops. The item 174 is suppose to turn. When it is working correctlly and the part 174 is turn by the driving gears when it stops. It will port through the holes on item 170 and then out via tubing to shifters for that speed,
The dial may be turning but 174 is not turning. If you take the shifter bracket off to look at the picuture of figer 131A, You may try putting air to the in the port on the bracket that is supplying the oil pressure. This might give you a clue to what is wrong.
When you have the bracket , check in the bottom of the casting and see if there is a piece about 1 1/2 inches long and has keys for three spling shaft. That piece is easy to loose and not know its off. So run a magnet in the bottom and see if anything is there.

    I will check this tomorrow.

cmike, where is the mechanism shown above located? You also mentioned before about pressure, how can you tell what it is? Is there a guage somewhere to show this or do you have to find out by some other method?
