Van Norman 12 - max size of APMT face mill

Hi,

I recently got a VN #12 with a 2hp 3 phase motor intended to be run off a rotary phase converter.

I'm looking at carbide insert face mills but I'm not sure how big I can go on a such a small machine.

I've used a 4" APMT face mill on a Trak K3 knee mill without problems.

I assume the limitation here is rigidity of the machine, not motor HP.

I attached a picture of what I'm talking about.

Thanks!

Actually, you may well be limited by horsepower. It all depends how fast you want to spin the cutter and can feed it accordingly, for a decent depth of cut. I think you will find it quite easy to run out of horsepower. I have stalled my 3 HP Deckel FP2NC pushing a 3" facemill hard.

Thanks for the response, rklopp. But my Van Norman #12 is a much smaller machine, ~1700 lbs.

I assume in my case, I would be more limited by machine rigidity.
