Default Van Norman 1R3 vs 1RQ3 spindle tapers

I've already checked John Kasunich's website and several Van Norman brochures for this, but would appreciate your input.

Concerning the spindle tapers on the Van Norman 1R3 and 1RQ3, please confirm or correct these statements:
    • The usual 1R3 taper was NT40 with NT30 as an option.
A factory VN "C" (aka 5V), B&S #7 or R8 adapter could be mounted in the NT40 taper.
    • The usual 1RQ3 taper was NT30 with VN "C" as an option. NT40 was not an available option for the 1RQ3.
A factory B&S #7 adapter could be mounted in the NT30 taper.

Have never seen or heard of a 1R3 with anything but a 40 taper. Of course, I had never heard of or seen a 1R3 with metric screws until I got mine home and started looking closely, either. At this point, the machines were basically custom made to whatever the buyer wanted (they only made about 450 1R3s and Qs combined total over 21 years of production). I don't think there was room in the quill for a 40 taper in the Q model. Having adapters for the C collets and B&S would not surprise me.

FWIW ...my Van Norman 16 M arrived w/ a B&S 7 adapter in the nmtb 30 holder ( beaver precision)......

tools for cheap lists an import R8 adapter for nmtb 30, very long since the taper is external to the spindle ..

    best wishes

The R-8 NMTB30 adapter is a useless POS. Member pieces en regalia has one that came with his Fray. They attempt to pin the R8 tooling in by running a setscrew against the side of the collet body instead of drawing it up into the taper with a drawbar. Completely unacceptable retention system. Don't waste your money.

Will be awhile untill I can check, but I recall using a VN 2RQ3 that had a NMTB50 taper spindle (maybe it was a 40?). It also had an taper adapter for 20V collets.

2RQ3 could be had with a 40 taper spindle, but the head on the 1RQ was just not big enough....

Yup, you are right, I checked and the 2RQ has a 40 taper.

2RQ would be a really nice machine. Big enough, quill, three axis powerfeeds (four including the quill feed) with rapids on the knee... Bet they are rare as chicken lips, though.

Don't know...how many were made? How many have survived? I've only seen and used one, but that doesn't mean anything. Look at Hendey lathes, couple of years back, 5 years or so, very little talk on the Antique machinery forum. Now it seems like a new thread is started every week as another Hendey is "discovered".

Kasunich's site says 301 of the 2R model, but no idea how many of those were Qs (only difference was the head).
