I'm in the process of converting my newly acquired K&T from 440V to 220V operation. I pulled the motor, cleaned it up and connected it to my 220V RPC. When I fired it up it was clear that the bearings needed attention. When I opened it up I found a sealed bearing on the aft end that was buried in semi-hardened grease. The bearing on the shaft end had a shield on one side (toward the rotor) and was open on the other side. The grease in and around that bearing was quite hard and had to be dug and scraped out. I replaced both bearings (6306 and 6205) and now the motor runs quiet and smooth.

The next step is to reinstall the motor and modify the control circuitry for 220V. Fortunately, the wiring diagram inside the door of the control box is intact and readable, albeit somewhat yellowed. I took a picture of it with my phone and I'm attaching the image in case it might be useful for someone else.
