We are looking at turning and broaching some 660D round bar for a 3/4" in hex head specialty cap screw and the tool suppliers haven't been terribly excited about the longevity of their tools in this stuff. We planned to run a rotary broach in a live tool lathe, but we're starting to have second thoughts. Has anyone out there broached 660D? If so, any feedback on the to-do's and to-don'ts would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You are going to need one helluva lathe to rotary broach 3/4 AF  ...but in stainless ?

IMO you'd be much better off milling them leaving the corners of the hex relieved, .what the socket wrench makers call flank drive etc etc etc.

Our customers are broaching much tougher materials than 660D, such as Cobalt Chrome and Custom 455. However nothing in hex sizes above .275. If your machine could handle their power, we could supply you with our Rayco broach tools that will hold up.
