Default DA-180 Collet Chuck-I'm stumped what it is...and does??!!

I got several of these DA-180 collet chucks that have a 1" straight shank. They came with my Mori SL1-A's. The collet chucks are made by Erickson.

Does anybody know what these are and more importantly what they are used for??!!!

    Thanks!!!!

Are you sure, or is it a guess?

That's what I was thinking, but the knurl ring on the front would have to be backed off far enough for the "dogs" to disengage...and the knurled ring won't screw on when the dogs are disengaged-not enough threads on the holder.

And why do they have thrust bearings on both sides-along with dogs on each side?

Well it seemed logical to me but then I havent looked at the parts as closely as you have. I assumed the parts could rotate once they have lifted off the pins inside the housing. If not then I dont know what they could be used for.

Athack is right... floating holder to compensate for any small misalignment of the reamers (usually) and sometimes drills, although not as necessary with drills.

Floating would make sense, but still mystified why thrust bearings would be needed in a floating holder?

Is floating in the sense it floats all the time, or do you lock it somehow after its in the correct position?

We use them to float all the time. The amount of float and floating pressure is adjustable by the threaded rings. The wider rind adjusts pressure and the thinner ring lock the other in place.

I have one with a qc30 shank for the Bridgeport, the thrust bearing just helps it slide around nicely. Can be great for rigid tapping or reaming. Anything were you ant to follow the existing hole and allow some self guidance!

It looks a lot like my floating reamer holder (Kennemetal) I suspect the bearings allow for smooth rotation off axis. There is some give in both radial and axial planes.
    (Did I say that right?)

Thanks guys! I played with it more, and I see how it floats now...pretty cool!

Am I right that the lower ring is a stop for how far your tighten the knurled ring? As in your can adjust how "free" of movement it has, or you can lock it down so it doesn't move?

    Close enough for me Dave!

I think the knurled ring is what sets the tension and the next ring is the locking collar. I generally run mine pretty loose, most of what I run is 5/16 and smaller, I've noticed on larger reamers it wants more pressure (tighter) or it'll squeal. It works like a champ for what I do and the holes pretty much come out to size purt near all the time.
