Driving an Electro Craft DC brush type motor/tach with an Electro Craft Max 430 servo drive on a high precision two axis machine. The servo motor is noisy in operation and goes into over current condition and stops at anything over about 10 percent of full speed. Extensive tuning of the Electro Craft Max 430 servo drives has been done. Mysterious in that we had the problem on Z axis and replaced the motor/tach and found very good response and smooth motion. The tach response to square wave input was very clean where it had been very noisy on the earlier motor/tach. As soon as the Z axis was now running very smoothly, the same problem showed up on the X axis. That axis motor/tach had been running very smoothly before. The tach response to square wave input to the servo drive for that motor/tach looks acceptable although not quite as good as we now see on the Z axis. We tested three other identical DC servo motors we have to pick the best one for the replacement of the noisy Z axis motor. It seems we could try to find another servo motor/tach but the sudden noise on the X axis makes us think there could be some set up error we are making or some incompatiblity of an Electo Craft Max 430 servo drive with an Electro Craft brush type DC servo motor/tach. Any ideas are experience on this type problem will be much appreciated.
