Well, title says it all. The X servo drive went spazdic, undamped, and shorted a winding in the motor. This was the new motor I put on it when I bought the machine -- $485. I have been investigating brushless AC drive retrofits a few months ago. I found Servo Dynamics in southern CA, good product offering and very good prices. I ordered up a new Sanyo-Denki motor and Ruby AC drive for the X-axis. It's probably gonna end up about $1200 to my door. The motor is a near perfect fit replacement, just the shaft size is different (and it has a 100mm square flange BHC for the mount, already did this a while ago).

So, with luck I'll have the X-axis retrofitted by Friday and the machine back in service. I might put together a turnkey retrofit kit for these machines, if anyone is interested. Hardinge sells a kit for $9200 IIRC, I could probably sell it for half that and supply all the parts turnkey.
