Center Drilling

Would like some ideas on how some of you seasoned lathe operators face off a long part and center drill for tail stock. I have a 18.25" X 3.25" DIA shaft that I should really be running with tailstock. I had previously custom made a long set of jaws to be able to face it off and drill without knocking it out of chuck. I got to thinking that was stupid, if I could face it off with the long jaws and no chatter, might as well turn my profile and quit using tailstock. So that is what I did and everything worked fine. But this time now, I can not stop chatter. Is there something outside of lathe that makes this center drilling easier and quicker than installing long jaws and going through the parts facing and drilling, and then changing jaws and handling parts again to turn profile into part while in tailstock? Am I making myself understood? :nutter: Maybe nothing any better/quicker than what I have been doing? Pic of part attached
