We're in the market for a new 2 axis lathe to replace an old Puma 12L.
I was automatically going to go for a box slideway design with a gearbox driven spindle (like the Puma).
However I notice that a lot of the bigger machines these days are using direct drive. I'm just wondering if anyone here has experience with these machines?
We do a lot of duplex forgings that require a lot of big dia (12") intermittent cutting. Are the direct drive machines worth considering? The old Puma could handle some serious cuts and I want to get similar performance.
