Hello,

First or all let me say I don't have any idea about CNC machines. My background is mainly from the process automation, PLC programation, SCADAS and all that stuff.

A customer of mine have a couple of CNC old machines (TRAUB TX-8 and a HEIDENHAIN TNC 355). He's wondering if we can connect this machines to a computer and send some data to a server. For example, parts produced, alarms, Spindle Speed, etc...

My question is: what's the best way to connect with this machines to get the information? Is it possible to get information for the RS232 port? Someone have to program the PLC of the machine to generate this information and if is not possible for the RS232 port, generate some kind o digital output?

I was thinking in a rapberry PI with a RS232/ethernet converter to send the data to the server.

i have used a GRECO MINI FILE PLUS SS2 USB CNC data input machine and a flash drive
