Getting ready to pull the trigger on a VMC.
Going on Tuesday to give it a finally look. Our 1st VMC.... to complement of CNC floor mill. Not the most popular machine...a Cincinnati , but it a 80/30/30 Cat 50 machine with a conversational control.
-
Congrats Jay! Hope it works out for you.

Cincy's may not be popular by the majority but I like em.

Jay, I'm sure you've already considered this but when buying ANY used machine, make sure service/support is at the very top of your list.
Best Regards,
Russ

+1
I hope it's a 2100, conversational on an 850 is gruesome.
You don't see as many Cincinnatis because of the price. Super rugged machines.

I think he'd be better off with a fixed table vertical than any of the arrows/ sabres. The sabre/ arrow 2000's were plagued with issues, someone on here had one that nver did run right. Those are 40 taper devils though so its gotta be a lancer or a FTV.
-
didnt think about the 50 taper. As far as Arrows and the problems, My biggest beef was that darn Dropsa spindle alarm. It was nice that the machine didnt use way oil! not sure about them big boy Lancers and FTV's
-
Sounds like the first CNC I ever ran...a 20VC-2000, with an Acramatic 850 control....That was a 1986 model.

Here she is, Lancer 2000 with the 2100 control, 50 taper, 6000 rpm. 31000 lbs of iron, 1998

1998 i think was the first year for the red spindle head covers. #1 thing to do- make a ghost image of the hard drive. DO NOT use anything other than a dos based image software.... some of the win xp and newer drive clone softwares will corrupt nt 4.0 and you'll be SOL except buying a new drive from siemens.
#2 - contact cincinnati and get the machine application software - there are 3 items in the software level section of the control, you have to load 2 of them at the machine, the machine application and nc extensions. Have those and you will be able to recover from a dead hdd. There are other tricks to the 2100, it has really powerful built in dnc through the optional ethernet card. Its luck if you have one.... if you run long 3d contouring code its a godsend. I'd tear it down and check all the couplings and repack the thrust bearings first thing. If its like the sabres they are not greased with the manifold of zerks on the tables.
If it has a dropsa lube( read air/oil mist spindle oiler id's by a gallon size tank of 32 viscosity lube on the back of the column), take the bottom cover off the spindle head and make sure its working. should be able to get an oil stain on paper towels within 30 minutes or so if it is. Some of the lower rpm spindles in arrows were permanently grease packed so yours may be as well. Never had a lancer.
