Help with stepper motor wiring for a Sherline mill and D&M 4s Machining Center

Hi everyone, I just got this package, it came from a School that had a machining course at one time. At some point the control boards were bypassed, so the Sherline could run on it's CNC system, or at least close to that currently. My only problem is the wiring to the male connector. I was given three connectors for -x- -y- and -z- cables from the hard wired computer to the machining center where the mill connects. I set up the pins and wires the same way the mill is set up to that connector and with quick switches to change them. The stepper buzzes and heats up, but won't spin.My stepper motors are Vexta 2 phase from Oriental Motors, not Sherline steppers so Sherline couldn't help they said. Any help would be great. If you Google "Sherline Forum"

A specialist forum for that manufacturer will come up.

Edit to add

You will know its the correct forum as it will say "Welcome to the Sherline Forum"

This site is not geared toward hobbiests and what you have there is a hobby machine, if that. I doubt you'll get much help here, and this thread will likely be locked due to the discussion guidelines.

That being said, I used to own one of those. Thought it would be a good way to learn CNC and I got it for $300 (Think I over payed).

What you have is someone else's hobby project. To get it running, assuming it hasn't run in your presence and the person who built it left you no notes, you are going to need the manuals to the steppers, the drivers, the isolation board and the CNC software.

You'll need to spend some time with a multimeter and maybe an oscilloscope to figure out what is going on and what needs to change to make everything play well together because nobody else has your exact setup and you don't have the base knowledge yet to intuit what should be happening.

When you get done, you'll know a whole lot more about steppers, drivers, Linux etc. and have a mill that struggles to cut thin aluminum and roughs material at .03 depth of cut, without accuracy, and can start learning CNC. It's at that point that I donated mine to the local maker space and began looking for a real CNC.

Seriously try C+N+C ------ Zone. You may find hobbiests there who can help you as they have built their own CNC's and are familiar with the fundamentals.

Thank you,it is a project that I'm stuck with for sure, it came with the Flashcut software and computer, I can also program in Mastercam and run it. I program and run 3 4 and 5 axis mills for The Boeing Company and thought this would be a fun little toy to make baby cuts with.
