Material for a job....what would you pick?

Customer leaves it up to me. Turning job. 1.750" DIA material. Fairly easy part. OD turn. Couple a bores and some OD threads- 1.500-12 UNF.
The three options:
17-4 PH A564 Cond H900
13-8 PH A564 Cond H950
440C HT to 50-55 RC

Wouldn't 17-4PH Cond H900 be the nicest to work with?

Another vote for 17-4.

Machines great and easy to get a nice finish.

13-8 is fricken expensive!!! About 6x as much as 17-4...

And 440C smells funny and rusts, and that hardness is getting up there...

Was there ever any question?

The 440 would be machined then heat treated


I just don't machine much of any of them. The only SS I see in the shop is 303, 304, 316, 410, and 416.

I guess the customer doesn't care about corrosion cracking in the H900. The 17-4 would be my choice.

I'd choose any of the 2 without the heat treat step required. Less predictable process unless you have a very well streamlined HT facility with really good ovens and everything. Also potential for part distorsion. Just not worth it if its a choice up to you. Then I'd go for price and easier to machine which is 17-4.
